In a recent video, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, urging more babies, appears emotional as he wipes tears. He calls for action to tackle the country’s declining birth rates and encourages women to have more children.
He is seen in the video, which is circulating on social media, gazing down and wiping away tears. Numerous spectators can also be seen wiping away their tears.
During a Mother’s Day gathering in Pyongyang, Kim Jong Un said, “Preventing a decline in birth rates and ensuring good childcare are duties we must handle alongside mothers.” He added, “I also think about mothers when facing challenges with the party and state work.”
According to the UN Population Fund, North Korea’s fertility rate was 1.8 in 2023, despite a long-term decline. In comparison, Japan’s rate dropped to 1.26 last year, and South Korea’s fell to a historic low of 0.78. Clearly, low birth rates are a growing concern in the region.
There is a paediatrician shortage in South Korea as a result of declining birth rates, but one city is using matchmaking to increase birth rates. Kim Jong Un urging for more babies highlights North Korea’s concern over declining birth rates. His call emphasises the need for stronger support for mothers and effective childcare policies to address the demographic challenge.
